Following a successful trial across five stores in 2024, John Lewis will roll out its repair offering to all UK sites providing fashion repairs, alterations, dry cleaning and handbag restoration.
John Lewis partnered with Johnsons, a Timpson Group owned company, to enable customers to drop off items to be fixed, altered, cleaned or restored, with any brand accepted. Furthermore, John Lewis loyalty members will receive a 5% discount on single repair services.
Inspired by new figures that show more consumers are embracing the culture of mending and repair, the new service is designed to add to John Lewis’ lifespan guarantee.
“We’re still learning about which circular economy models work, so it’s great when a trial delivers positive results and shows us how we can make it effective at scale,” said Marija Rompani, director of ethics & sustainability for John Lewis Partnership.
“Repair is a crucial part of the circular economy and mirrors our commitment to designing items with quality and longevity in mind, as part of our circular strategy.”
The most popular services during the trial period were minor rips, seam repairs and trouser alterations. A vintage Chanel bag was restored to near-new condition within days.
John Lewis has also reported a growing trend in at-home repairs, with haberdashery accessories and sewing machine searches increasing year-on-year. The search for ‘pink sewing machines’ has jumped 255%.
